New law sets five-year term for barangay, SK officials; BSKE moved to 2028
CEBU CITY — Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials will serve under a new five-year term following the enactment of Republic Act No. 12326, with the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) moved to November 2028.

Senate President Chiz Escudero, principal author of the measure in the Senate, said the new law is intended to establish a clearer and more orderly cycle for barangay governance.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed the measure into law, completing the legislative process that changes the term of office for barangay and SK officials and resets the timing of the next BSKE.
Escudero said the longer, fixed term is expected to provide greater certainty and stability in local governance, particularly since barangays serve as the government’s frontliners in delivering public services to communities.
“The purpose of this law is to fix the system and ensure that there is a clear cycle in barangay governance,” Escudero said in a statement.
He added that a more orderly term of office would also help ensure continuity in public service at the barangay level.
Escudero thanked the President for the immediate signing of Republic Act No. 12326 and acknowledged senators and members of the House of Representatives for supporting the measure.
The senator said the legislation is intended to promote more stable and efficient governance in the country’s barangays. ###
